    Your eastern horizon at birth

The real sky over your birth place at your birth time, facing the rising degree. The constellation that was coming up is highlighted; the orange marker is your ascendant on the horizon.

What a rising sign is, in the sky

The Sun, Moon and planets all travel along one great circle in the sky, the ecliptic. Astrology divides it into twelve 30° signs. Because the Earth turns once a day, the whole circle wheels round the sky daily: at any moment half of it is above the horizon and half below, and it cuts the eastern horizon at exactly one point. That point is the ascendant, and the sign it falls in is your rising sign. The opposite point, setting in the west, is the descendant, and the point crossing the north-south meridian is the midheaven (MC).

The diagram above shows this for the moment you choose: the ecliptic drawn across the eastern sky, each sign marked, and the degree touching the horizon. Signs above the horizon rose earlier that day; the ones below are next in line.

As with the Sun sign, the rising sign is a zodiac sign, not a constellation. The sign scale is tied to the March equinox, and it has slid about 24° against the stars over 2,000 years, so the stars actually rising at your birth were usually those of the previous constellation. The result card names them.

Why your birth time matters so much

The full 360° of the zodiac rises in one sidereal day of 23 hours 56 minutes, so on average the ascendant moves one degree every four minutes and a new sign rises about every two hours. A birth time that is half an hour out moves the ascendant by around seven degrees, enough to change the sign about a quarter of the time. Daylight saving matters too: an hour's error is half a sign. That is why this calculator takes the time zone from your birth city and applies the daylight saving rules of your birth year.

Signs of long and short ascension

The signs do not rise evenly. The ecliptic is tilted 23.4° to the equator, so it meets the eastern horizon at an angle that keeps changing through the day. When it comes up at a shallow slant, a long stretch of zodiac clears the horizon quickly; when it comes up steeply, a sign takes much longer. In New York (40.7° N) Aries rises in just 1h 11m, while Scorpio takes 2h 33m. Further north the gap grows: in London Aries needs only 0h 52m and Virgo 2h 50m. Near the equator, in Singapore, every sign takes between 1h 50m and 2h 09m.

In the Southern Hemisphere the pattern flips. In Sydney the quick risers are Libra and its neighbours (1h 20m), and the slow ones are around Aquarius (2h 25m). One practical result: in northern mid-latitudes there are fewer people with Aries or Pisces rising than with Virgo or Libra rising, simply because those signs spend less time on the horizon.

    Near the poles

Beyond about 66° latitude, inside the Arctic and Antarctic circles, part of the ecliptic never rises at some times of day and the ascendant can leap across several signs within minutes. Astrologers disagree on how to handle charts there, and the calculator flags them.

A quick check: the sunrise rule

At sunrise the Sun is on the eastern horizon, so the rising sign equals the Sun sign. Today in New York the Sun rose at 7:03 AM, when the ascendant was 17°17' Libra and the Sun was at 18°09' Libra. They differ by about 0.9° because the official sunrise counts the moment the Sun's top edge appears, lifted by atmospheric refraction while the centre is still geometrically below the horizon. Two hours later the ascendant had moved on to 10°53' Scorpio. So a rough rule: born at sunrise, your rising sign is your Sun sign; then count about one sign on for every two hours.

    How the calculator works

For your birth moment it computes the local sidereal time at your birth place (the right ascension on your meridian, RAMC), the true tilt of the Earth's axis that day (the obliquity, 23°26' at present) and your latitude φ, and applies the standard formula:

    ASC = atan2( cos RAMC, −( sin RAMC · cos ε + tan φ · sin ε ) )

It then makes sure the answer is the eastern (rising) crossing and not the western one. Sidereal time and obliquity come from astronomy-engine. The same code reproduces the published ascendants of Einstein, Marilyn Monroe, Princess Diana and Barack Obama to within an arcminute: see the check table on the big three calculator.

    Rising sign, houses and lagna

In a birth chart the ascendant starts the first house, and the remaining houses follow round the chart. The simplest system, whole sign houses, makes your rising sign the whole first house, the next sign the second, and so on. Vedic astrology calls the ascendant the lagna and uses it the same way, but in the sidereal zodiac, which today is about 24° behind the tropical one; the result card shows your Lahiri lagna too. These are traditions of interpretation. The horizon geometry underneath them is plain astronomy, and you can see it for any moment in the sky view above.

    Questions people ask

How do I find my rising sign?

You need your date, exact time and place of birth. Enter them in the calculator above: it works out which degree of the zodiac was on the eastern horizon at that moment and place. That degree is your ascendant, and its sign is your rising sign.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not exactly. A new sign rises roughly every two hours, so without a time there are up to twelve possibilities. If you know roughly when you were born (morning, after midnight), tick "I don't know my birth time" and the calculator lists every rising sign through your birth day with its time window.

What is the difference between rising sign and ascendant?

They are the same thing. The ascendant is the exact degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon (for example 18° Aquarius); the rising sign is the sign that degree falls in.

Why does the rising sign need the place of birth?

The eastern horizon is different in different places. Your longitude sets which part of the sky is overhead at a given clock time, and your latitude sets the angle at which the zodiac meets the horizon. Two babies born at the same moment in London and New York have different rising signs.

How long does each rising sign last?

On average two hours, but it varies a lot. In New York Aries rises in about 1h 11m and Scorpio takes about 2h 33m. These are called signs of short and long ascension, and they swap over in the Southern Hemisphere.

Is my rising sign the same as my Sun sign?

Only if you were born around sunrise, when the Sun itself was on the eastern horizon. For every two hours or so after sunrise, the rising sign is roughly one sign further along.

What does the rising sign say about you?

In astrological tradition the rising sign describes your outward manner, first impressions and how you meet new situations, while the Sun sign describes your core self. It also sets the starting point of the twelve houses in a birth chart. These are traditional meanings, not scientific findings.

How accurate does my birth time need to be?

The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes on average. If your birth time is within a few minutes and you are not near a sign boundary, the rising sign is safe. The calculator shows how many minutes you were from the nearest change.

    What is the midheaven?

The midheaven (MC) is the degree of the zodiac crossing the meridian, the line from north to south through the point overhead. In the Northern Hemisphere it is the highest point of the zodiac in the southern sky. The calculator shows it alongside the ascendant.

What is lagna in Vedic astrology?

Lagna is the Vedic name for the ascendant. It is the same horizon point, but measured in the sidereal zodiac, which today is about 24° behind the Western one, so the Vedic lagna is often one sign earlier.

Why is my rising sign different on another website?

Usually because of the time zone or daylight saving time for the birth date, a different birth place, or a time rounded to the hour. This calculator uses the historic daylight saving rules for your city, so check the time zone line under the form.

What if I was born near the Arctic Circle?

North of about 66° latitude (or south of -66°) part of the zodiac never rises at some times of day, and the ascendant can jump across several signs in minutes. The calculator warns you when this applies.
